The silent struggle of first responders

Did you know that 80% of First Responders struggle with sleeplessness, anxiety, depression, increased alcohol use, and relationship struggles in the first 6 months after retirement?

In our research on retirement transition, a troubling pattern emerged, shedding light on the silent struggles faced by first responders’ post-retirement. Shockingly, the data revealed a substantial increase in suicide rates too..

Did you know that a significant number of first responders take their own lives after retirement… and an estimated 40% of these suicides occur in the first year of retiring!

These alarming figures show the impact of losing a career in service, compounded by ongoing medical
and mental health issues, pain management, and financial difficulties. Addressing these silent
struggles is not just a concern but an urgent necessity to safeguard the well-being of some of the
most important people in our society.

If you’re coming up on retirement or recently retired…
Does this sound familiar?

Most first responders find themselves creeping up on retirement and grappling with emotional and physical exhaustion, often without a clear plan. The hesitancy to address life post-retirement is fueled by the deep grief tied to traumatic incidents and the impending loss of identity and purpose.

Many believe they'll sort things out after a break, but the last workday becomes a battlefield of emotions, filled with mixed feelings of sorrow and accomplishment. Memories of lost colleagues and citizens linger, accompanied by a deep sadness and loss.

The journey to retirement becomes a private struggle, with tears, hidden goodbyes, and the weight of a lifetime of service lingering in silence.

Retirement is a beginning, not an end

With the right planning, you CAN establish your new personal identity and purpose, so you can go into your last work days with gratitude, pride and a sense of accomplishment.

You can continue to grow professionally, achieve, and thrive without the looming sense of dread and the belief that life, as you know it, is coming to an end.

If you’ve already retired from your first responder career,
there is no better time than now to get started!.

Better late than never.

Instructor Bio

With over three decades dedicated to the first responder profession, my journey led me to unexpected turns that reshaped my life's purpose. Facing 11 broken bones and 7 surgeries due to work-related injuries, I realized it was time to refocus my life. During a two-month medical leave for reconstructive surgery, I began to think about my next purpose post-retirement. Enlisting in the California Army National Guard at 53 added a new layer to my skill set, enhancing my leadership abilities and business management tools. This changed the course of my life in a meaningful way and I realized that I wanted to help other first responders have the same retirement transition.

Discovering the retirement struggles among first responders, my wife Susan and I embarked on a new mission. We explored the impact of unexpected retirement on our brave first responders and seeing the emotional rollercoaster these heroes encountered post-service made us realize that many retiring first responders lacked a clear plan. This inspired the birth of first responder retirement education and planning. This initiative aimed to guide individuals in transitioning to a fulfilling retirement, combating anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.

Recognizing the need for a comprehensive retirement transition model, we established the First Responder Retirement Academy. Today, we assist retiring first responders in crafting a blueprint for their next 20-30 years, fostering happiness, fulfillment, and a renewed sense of purpose. Through our program, they rediscover meaning each day, contribute to society, and plan their personal legacy, saving the lifesavers who dedicated their careers to saving others.
